A train derailed outside the ancient city of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain on Wednesday night, killing 78 people and injuring up to 131. One American was among the dead, and four others were injured.The incident is Spain's deadliest train accident in more than 40 years and one of Europe's worst ever rail disasters.El Pais newspaper, citing sources close to the investigation, reported the train was traveling at over twice the speed limit on a sharp curve.El Mundo reported the train may have approached speeds of up to 118 mph (190 km/h) — the limit is 50 mph (80 km/h) at the curve approaching the station at Santiago.
